Photo Radar – A Visitor’s Tax?

by Local Yokel Contributer 12. August 2009 09:02

We all know this is a very contentious topic. Why we have been so complacent about photo radar in Alberta? Other Provinces have stopped the practice. I have a many questions. We all suspect it is really a tax grab in the end and not a deterrent to speeding. But a tax grab from whom, and how much. And where do these revenues actually go and to whom? I also believe that Spruce Grove City Council and the Town of Stony Plain also treat it as a tax as well, read my next post for more on that.

Back in olden times I was “taxed” thrice by this “safety initiative”, when visiting Edmonton. If I had fought them I most likely would have won at least two of them. But who has the time? Since I really hate being taxed much less taxed in Edmonton, I did take the time once and the judge reduced my fine by $40.00 just to be rid of me. I have yet to be “taxed” in Spruce Grove or Stony Plain as I know where the traps are and what to look for.

I suspect that many drivers and are aware of where the photo radar traps are and what they look like. These motorists race up to the trap, slow down when they see one, then after the trap is out of site continue to speed along their way. It would be interesting to know how common this behaviour is. Let us know if you agree in our local-yokels forum.

How many visitors or passers by have been welcomed and “taxed”, just because they don’t have access to our local rag? Is this the kind of first impression we want to give visitor to our communities?

Is there any actual proof that photo radar actually reduces speeding and makes us safer? I am going to try and find out.

We would love your comments on this article at our local-yokels blog. More photo radar next time…
