At first I just passed over my little discovery thinking, that’s cool and went on my merry way. But after watching it thrive over the past few weeks I began to see that my discovery is truly amazing on many different levels.
My discovery is not amazing in and of it self, but where I found it. Gardeners often find volunteer petunias in their gardens. But my little petunia found a way to thrive in the hot dry pavement of our parking lot!
I thought wow, such a pretty little thing. It has the audacity invade Man’s progress. This brave act of nature found a place for itself despite my efforts to control my environment. Without asking it made my view a bit prettier while exposing how ugly Man’s efforts can be. How many of us could boast such persistence and tenacity and at the same time raise a smile? It reminds us all that the smallest most fragile things in the most unlikely places can succeed in spite of great obstacles.
This pavement petunia is another reminder that Man is really just a guest on this planet and in the end nature and life will always find a way. At the same time my pavement petunia gives us hope. Hope that if we look close and learn we can co-exist with nature. Hope that the little guy can succeed, question our city hall or expose an injustice.
I watered my Pavement Petunia this morning.
